Study in United States

The USA still has the deepest concentration of research funding, faculty and graduate employers — and for STEM graduates, three years of post-study work through the OPT extension.

Why United States

What makes this route worth considering

  • Unmatched breadth: thousands of institutions, so there is genuinely a fit at most profiles and budgets.
  • Assistantships and funding at graduate level can offset a large share of tuition.
  • STEM OPT extends post-study work to 36 months, the longest of any major destination.

Costs

What it costs

  • Tuition (indicative): USD 25,000 – 60,000 per year
  • Living costs: USD 12,000 – 20,000 per year, city-dependent
  • Proof of funds: Required for the I-20 — the institution sets the figure
Intakes

Intakes & timing

Fall (August/September) is the dominant intake, with a smaller Spring intake in January. Fall applicants should start 12–15 months ahead because of test scores and funding deadlines.

Visa

Visa & work rights

  • F-1 student visa, applied for after the institution issues your I-20.
  • Visa interview at the consulate — preparation matters more here than for most destinations.
  • Optional Practical Training: 12 months, extended by 24 months for eligible STEM degrees.
  • On-campus work permitted; off-campus work is tightly restricted.

Figures are indicative and rules change. Tuition, living costs, proof-of-funds amounts and visa conditions for United States are revised regularly by institutions and authorities. Treat this page as a starting point for planning, confirm current requirements with your counsellor, and remember that visa decisions rest solely with the immigration authority.
